A fifty-fifty mix of hotels and camping seems about right. I checked the weather for the route this morning to get a realistic sense of temperatures. The outbound part of the route looked delightful, so there will be more camping than hotel on the way west. The chilly higher elevation of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon may cause us to think twice about sleeping on the ground. At least cold blooded critters like rattlesnakes and scorpions will be dormant. But days are getting longer as we've just passed the mid-point of Spring. With longer days will come continually warmer nights.
We will certainly be ready for a comfortable bed by the time we get to Las Vegas. I had a notion to go there with no reservation at all and see what kind of deal I could negotiate ... but chickened out an reserved a room on Priceline.
We have campsite reservations for two nights at Yosemite where the nightly low should be about 40 degrees F. Brrr.
Here is the planned route. It is flexible and everything from Klamath Falls, OR (location L on the map) homeward is likely to change.
